3 Benefits of Drinking Coffee During The Workday

Coffee often makes entrepreneurs’ and employees’ worlds go round.

Yes, it’s cliché though coffee can help keep those ready to work hard dialed in to their tasks at hand. From energy and focus to enhanced productivity to boosting creativity, your coffee may be doing more than just ‘waking you up’ for the day.

Here at PRIMARY, we have around 5 coffee canisters that each hold an estimated 12 cups, and each gets refilled about 2 times a day! That is…a lot of coffee.

While there are negatives to consuming too much coffee, when it’s paired with adequate sleep, nutrition, and exercise, there are plenty of benefits!

We explored three that are important for anyone but especially entrepreneurs – energy, brain function, and mental health.

First up is energy. While this is a short-term effect, caffeine is a stimulant that may increase energy levels. Instead of the energy being boosted from ATP (energy storage at the cellular level),  according to Matthew W. Johnson, Ph.D. via MindBodyGreen, the activity of the neurotransmitter adenosine, which promotes relaxation and drowsiness, is reduced.

Next is brain function which encompasses mood, attention, general mental function, focus, memory, and more. According to a piece on CNBC, caffeine may increase serotonin and acetylcholine, while coffee specifically may activate antioxidants, and prevent tissue damage, protecting brain blood vessels.

Additionally, WebMD suggests that 2-3 cups per day can have positive effects on anxiety and depression. Other studies agree, with Medical News Today noting that tea may not be as effective.

Aside from internal health benefits, a daily coffee ritual can signify the start of the workday, provide moments of relaxation, and may also increase socialization during the day.

It’s important to note that caffeine is a stimulant and you should consult with your physician to explore how much coffee is OK for you to consume.
